Select your primary medium is your 2nd point in the checklist to build online influence. Remember, follow these points so you won't need to hire me to coach you through the process.

It's important to select one primary medium

To build your online reputation it is important to select your primary medium. This doesn’t mean you can't expand to others later, but for now start with one medium.

Just like different TV channels have different viewers, different media have different audiences.

Where will you find your audience of followers? When I was asked this my response was, "I don't know." When I asked my coaching students their response was, "I don't know."

My mentor Ken Krell told me to find them where they like to spend their time. And he told me to look for them in different media but focus on only one medium.

I struggled for over a year

Then, I struggled over a year. I looked for the best-fit medium where my ideal audience spends most time.

To save you time and ease your learning curve, I've found some guiding questions. There are several variables that guide your selection of a primary medium.

The most important factor, is where are the majority of your followers or potential followers? So, where do they spend their time online?

If you already have a following, the majority of your following is probably in one medium. As a result, your majority could be on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.

For that reason, it will be easier to focus on that ONE medium to build your influence.

Ideas to keep in mind

Are you just beginning or do you have followers in several media? If either of these is true, you will want to narrow your focus. Therefore you will want to find one medium has the highest concentration of your followers.

As in the past advertisers focused on different TV channels to connect with specific audiences. This was because they could focus most of their attention on specific age, income, gender, etc.

Because of social media, you can find followers based on interests, passions, finance, health, etc. This is due to the long tail of the internet. If you wanted you can find a million people who love Smurfs, for example.

Above all your primary medium tells your followers who you are and what’s your focus. After creating a strong following in your primary medium, you can move into other media. Then you can build your influence thin those if you want.

Guiding questions to select your primary medium

Here are some questions we use to get you started on selecting your primary medium.
1. What is most comfortable for you, written, video, photography, or audio?
2. On which medium do you spend most of your time?
3. What are the differences among media audiences?
4. How do you align with the "mood of the room" for each medium?
5. Which medium aligns with your personal brand values?
6. Is there a medium that most aligns with your niche passion?
7. Which medium has audience demographics aligning to your niche?
8. Where can you find others who share your passion, i.e. where is your competition?
